Geek Culture Taking Over?

I was thinking about our discussion in class today about "geek culture", and found this TIME article talking about how being a "geek" is now in.

Its interesting to think about how our world now revolves around things that were once considered very "geeky". Do you think maybe there is a geek inside all of us, which is now acceptable to reveal? Or are the "geeky" technological advances of society, which are forced upon us, responsible for changing our culture? hmm...

Speaking of Flash Mobs...

So in my Advertising class we talked about improv and were assigned to watch some YouTube videos featuring Improv Everywhere, a group that does improv throughout New York City.

Facebook, the sixth most trafficked Web site, has become a popular place for people to post pictures and interact socially online.

While most use it to catch up with friends and maybe meet new ones, employers, recruiters and parents are keeping an eye out as well.

"Our board of trustees has had meetings about Facebook," said Jessica DuBois, SMU Career Center. "That should tell you something right there."

Because users can't know who is logging onto to their page, DuBois said the school is stressing that students should post responsibly. The goal is to tone down some of the racy pictures and encourage students to use privacy blockers.

Toulmin

I am writing about media bias and how watchdog organizations find these biases and highlight them for you on their websites.

Claim: Media bias allows for news organizations to present to us non-factual, opinionated information.

Reasons: The media shapes our perceptions and has control of what we are informed on.

Warrant: News organizations are being associated with party affiliations.

Backing: Fox news is known to be conservative and CNN along with most other news networks are considered to be liberal media.

Objections: News anchors can express their opinions because of freedom of speech and to gain similar audience viewers.

Video Games surpassing Movies?

One of the questions following my presentation was whether it's believed if video games could one day surpass the movie industry. I found this story about the battling of sales between the newest Grand Theft Auto game and the comic-based summer movie Iron Man.

I found a website dedicated to the Hubble Telescope. This website has a photo gallery of Hubble's images ranging from galaxies to planets. Here is the link to the gallery.

The presentation on Austin going green made me think about the new ways the country has gone green. Here's an article on America's Debate on how Time magazine proposes new ways.
