Web Development Rhetoric RHE 309K • Fall 2008

Books

Required

You need the following books for this class:

  • Krug, Steve. Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability. Second edition. 2006. ISBN 0-321-34475-8. Available from the Co-op.
  • Robbins, Jennifer. Learning Web Design: a Beginner’s Guide to (X)HTML, Style Sheets, and Web Graphics. 3rd edition. ISBN 0-596-52752-7.
  • Child, Dave. HTML and CSS Cheat Sheet. Purchase this at Jenn's Copy Shop, on Guadalupe and 22nd, below the scientology building. It's about $5, plus tax.

Only the Krug is available at the co-op. The Robbins you can get from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Intellectual Property, BookPeople, AbeBooks, or your preferred book store.

Optional

  • Robbins, Jennifer. HTML & XHTML Pocket Reference. 3rd edition. ISBN 0-596-52727-6.
  • Meyer, Eric. CSS Pocket Reference. 2nd edition. ISBN 0-596-00777-9.

These are reference books — they give details on how individual bits of code are supposed to work, but not how to put the many possible bits together in useful ways. They’re fairly inexpensive (about $10 each), and highly portable. However, you can get much of the same information from the web, for example the Sitepoint HTML and CSS references, which also have information on browser support for each HTML tag or CSS property.
