Grading:
Grading during the semester. Each student will be graded holistically in this class. Throughout the term, students will receive feedback on their work and will be asked to revise, but they will not receive individual grades on assignments.
Grading at the end of the semester. Since grades in graduate school rarely dip below a B and do not circulate beyond the context of the immediate class or the localized program in which a student is enrolled, they function largely to signal one's standing with an instructor. For the purposes of this class, an A will indicate that the instructor is willing to continue working with the student after the class has ended (in an advisory capacity, as a member of a thesis committee, and so forth). An A- will indicate that the instructor is not willing to work with a student after the class has ended. Neither grade should be regarded as an evaluation of the student's ability to pursue graduate studies.
Attendance
Graduate students do and should take responsibility for the quotidian details of their education. There is no point in taking attendance when people must direct and motivate themselves. In this class, students are welcome to come as little or as often as they would like. There will be no tally of who arrives or when.
Nota Bene
Any student with a documented disability (physical or cognitive) who requires academic accommodations should contact the Services for Students with Disabilities area of the Office of the Dean of Students at 471-6259 (voice) or 471-4641 (TTY for users who are deaf or hard of hearing) as soon as possible to request an official letter outlining authorized accommodations.
