1) A. In the movie “Gone Baby Gone” the director emphasizes mainly on pathos and then ethos. Since the whole story of the film is based on a young child who gets kidnapped, the movie plays with the audience’s feelings until the end of the movie. The movie starts by showing the life of a young successful special detective who investigates in the case. The detective’s character has three stages in the film, first when he refuses to accept to investigate because he thinks they won’t find the child alive since she disappeared 3 days before. Secondly, when he starts the investigation with the policemen and tries to find the child even by putting his own life in risk. Finally when he finds the child he does what he thinks is the right thing although all the other characters in the movie disagree with which is calling the cops.
2) A. In “Do the Right Thing” one can easily see how the director focuses on images to make his argument. For example, he effectively shows the audience how hot it was that day in the neighborhood. People are always sweating throughout the movie. Furthermore, when filming the characters there is a yellowish color to indicate the sun. Also, the colors of the buildings and what the actors were wearing. There was a whole seen when they were all playing with the water to get colder, all of this was to show how heat could affect ones behavior and cause problems like what happened in the movie.
3) The argument made in “Gone Baby Gone” is whether someone could or could not decide what is the best for a child? Is it fair to take a person’s child because s/he doesn’t give enough care to the child? This is what the movie tries to answer. Watching the movie until the end shows that the filmmaker supports the idea that people should do whatever they can to make the child happy no matter what the consequences on the parents are. The filmmaker supports his idea through several characters in the movie, Morgan Freeman, the detective’s girlfriend and the child by appealing to pathos. The intended audience is parents, since the objective of the movie is encouraging parents to care more about their children.
4) B. In “Do The Right Thing” the defining moment is when Raheem enters Sal's pizzeria with his radio, this is a crucial moment since it leads to the fight that eventually caused Raheem’s death. And in this scene violence was used for the first time. In “Gone Baby Gone” the defining moment is when Patrick talks with Morgan Freeman after finding the young girl. This moment defines the movie since it shows the two sides of the argument. In this scene, Patrick explains why he wants to call the police and Morgan Freeman defends kidnapping the girl. After watching this, the audience could chose which action they think is the right thing.
