Quiz 4 (Sang-Min Kim)

1.a) Ben Affleck uses a technique more similar to Lewis's in The Blind side. Ben seems to focus more on ethos and pathos to attract viewers like Lewis uses a lot on the use of ethos and pathos. Both main character, Patrick and Mookie are in the similar way that they conflict between their decision. I think that Ben would be a better choice to adapt Lewis's book and direct the film based on it. like Lewis work on the pathos, Ben uses the appeal of pathos a lot in the movie when missing child is dead and Amanda's dark background like Michael Oher. Narrating would be the role in the resulting film, like Lewis narrates a lot in the book, so Ben would better use a narrator in the resulting movie.

2.a) the visual images and sounds contribute a lot on the Do the Right Thing. Spike Lee uses usually vivid colors in the movie and they represent African American very well. and also it seems to be very hot in the movie like viewers might feel also hot. He intents to make viewers to feel hot by the visual images. and it makes very clear for his argument when the film shows the fame of the wall from Italian Americans to Malcom X with M.L.K. And he works a lot on the sound, even in the first part of the movie he uses sound track to give viewers his argument. Their slangs also very well represent African American culture, so that viewers and audiences are more likely to understand his massages from sound.

3.b) Ben Affleck argues a child should live with real parents with poor status like drug addict or apapt to parents with better status like weathies. He shows his claim with Patrick who calls the police when he sees Amanda with Jack. He uses the appeal of pathos when Lionel says the situation that Amanda in the car left by Helen, and also uses ethos when he describes Patrick who is very straightforward man, even his girl friend could not convince him by begging. this movie reveals biases that Mogan Freeman(?) would never be a bad guy and African American would not kidnap a child to raise because I wouldnot think Jack kidnapped her until the end of the movie.

4.in the Do the Right Thing the defining moment is when Marley(?) puts the Malcom X and MLK's picture on the wall in the sal's pizza. they both fought in the past against racism and now they are fighting and breaking the sal's. It's a message to fight the power from Spike Lee. In the Gone Baby Gone the defining moment is when Patrick finds Amanda at the Jack's house. They have an argument for minutes and Patrick looks very firm at the first time, but after he sees Amanda not happy with her back home he seems to be little confused. I think that Ben Affleck leaves the question at the end that he do the right thing or not.

Bonus) Both main character, Patrick and Mookie are in the similar way that they conflict between their decision. the both directors want to convince viewers that they do the right thing. even though Mookie works at the sal's, he conflicts himself that he's not doing right thing and his friends and older people wants him to do the right thing. In the other hand, in the movie, Gone Baby Gone, Patrick does the right thing, but people around him don't want him to do the right thing. The thesis " the Other America" would be the neighborhood in minorities. Both movies deal with poverty and lower status African American society and problems in the neighborhood
