When you examine a regular piece of poetry, you notice that the main aspects of the poem is to capture the emotion of the reader. In the brief testimony the writer was able to show how the survivor was feeling during this scene. By doing so the reader can only find himself feeling sympathy towards the man who actually had to endure this. So Urrea making this into poetic form allows the reader to relate himself to the survivor.
The description and form that Urrea uses makes the experience more believable.
