video game laws and the daily texan

if anyone has a copy of the daily texan from yesterday (August 7th) - there is an interesting article on the last page about video game laws (reminiscent of "Breeding evil?")

Down with the Death Penalty
One thousand thirty-two people have been executed over the past thirty years. Eight hundred sixty-four were murdered by lethal injection, one hundred fifty-two were electrocuted, three were hung, two were shot by a firing squad. All innocent? No. All guilty? Maybe not. This uncertainty illustrates the inappropriateness of the death penalty in our society today because life imprisonment without the chance of parole serves the same purpose as a severe form of criminal punishment minus the high cost and the disrespect of human life.

death penalty

Considering our discussion today in class, I found this site to be particularly interest. It is about whether or not the death penalty deters crime or not.

Six Flags: Its PLAYTIME!

When it comes to ridiculous commercials, I think this one takes the cake...

(for this one you have to click on "on the web")
I found it funny that a user comment was "We should elect the Six Flags Guy for President!"

I don't know if i should laugh or cry.

Media Choices

Turn on the TV. Open a magazine. Go see a movie. More often than not, you'll be bombarded by themes of violence, vulgarity, sexuality, and other immoral ideals. For the impressionable youth of America, this is "reality." It teaches them that fighting, murder, premarital sex, drug abuse, anorexia, etc are not only normal, but "cool."
Video game playing, a common pasttime for young boys, can also impact the opinion's of the younger generation. Driving cars wrecklessly and violently attacking (and often killing) other human beings desensitiizes the player to the obsenity of these actions. But as long as it doesn't carry on into the "real" world, it's not a problem, right? Wrong.

Visual Rhetoric: ANTI-SMOKING

The first ad is from the World Health Organization, the second is from tobaccofree.org, and the third is from http://no-smoking.org/dec01/12-20-01-2.html. They all argue against smoking.
