The Writing Process (RHE309L) is an intermediate-level, intensive writing workshop designed to help you develop a writing style that is personal, engaging, lively, and grammatically/mechanically correct.
To reach this goal, we'll work as a community of writers. You'll write several short papers in a variety of genres, and your classmates and I will provide suggestions to help you revise. In our responses, we'll focus on two basic questions: "What does this paper do well?" and "How can this paper be improved?" Some suggestions will be about the ideas you present in your papers--we'll offer tips to help you develop them completely and clearly. Others will be related to grammar, mechanics, and that area that is so crucial to good writing--style!
So what is style? And what kinds of styles work for different audiences? These are some of the questions we'll engage in class. We'll read a lot of material by writers whose styles are widely admired, and we'll rely on plenty of tried-and-true advice from John Trimble, John Ruszkiewicz, Anne Lamott, Natalie Goldberg, and others who've taught people to write well.
My name is Alice Batt, and I'm your instructor. I'm passionate about writing myself, and I'm excited about working with you on your own writing.
